April Showers

As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. If that’s all that April rains produced, the kaleidoscope of spring colors and beauty is worth it. However, that old saw overlooks many more important benefits of our April rains.

Spring rains help fill our lakes and marshes, flood our streams, and produce many puddles. This surge of water creates some important habitat conditions for many species of fish and wildlife.

Rising lake and stream levels provide access to fringe wetlands for fish spawning, and a pulse of insects to feed fish and birds. Flooded marshes are frog and salamander factories, producing thousands of tadpoles per acre. Even puddles standing in fields provide vital isolation for breeding pairs of ducks and wading birds. Beyond these fish and wildlife benefits, spring rains and melt waters help recharge groundwater levels, spur plant growth, and help moderate our climate by adding moisture to the atmosphere and providing resilience to drought.

Just like April showers, the value of Horicon Bank goes beyond financial matters and includes many dimensions of community stewardship. Horicon bankers are committed to supporting financial wellness, solving business problems, providing tools to manage and plan personal finances, volunteer for community projects, and sharing financial support in meaningful ways.
