Pileated woodpeckers are big, measuring about 18 inches long, with a wingspan of roughly 30 inches. It is this mix of large and small cavities that provides critical shelter and nesting for many other forest species, like chickadees, nuthatches, flycatchers, owls, and many more! These cavities are occupied on cold December nights for warmth, as well as spring days for nesting.
