As our customers know, Horicon Bank recently celebrated its 125th anniversary of serving Wisconsin as the foremost community bank in the state. However, another local resident still has us beat for longevity and that is the lake sturgeon. This impressive fish is an important part of the Lake Winnebago ecosystem and many Wisconsin communities.
Sturgeons are a unique and ancient fish species which is estimated to have emerged over 100 million years ago. They are known as the largest freshwater fish species in the state with some individuals tipping the scales at over 200 pounds! While it takes 20—30 years for these fish to reach maturity and begin reproducing, they live a very long time. Many lake sturgeon live over 60 years, and some have been aged at over 150 years! There are an estimated 42,000 adult lake sturgeon in the Lake Winnebago System.
As many Horicon Bankers and customers know, February is Sturgeon Season on Lakes Poygan, Butte des Morts, and Winnebago. This unique Wisconsin tradition attracts people from all over the country to join many locals for a sturgeon quest. Over 12,200 people will head out on the ice with family and friends in search of memories and one of the estimated 42,000 lake sturgeon in the Lake Winnebago System. If conditions are favorable, up to 1,800 sturgeons may be harvested this month.
