Witch hazel is one of our most unique plants. This medium sized shrub grows 6-15 feet high in hardwood forests throughout the state. With smooth gray bark and a deep gold fall foliage, it often blends into the forest understory. However, it really stands out in some fun ways.
Witch Hazel is the only Wisconsin shrub to start blooming after its leaves have fallen in autumn. Beginning in late October, Witch hazel puts out delicate yellow flowers and continues flowering until December since bitter cold temperatures do not damage these hardy blossoms. Even more impressively, during this time the fruits from last year also ripen. To top it all off, their fully ripe fruits literally explode to launch seeds up to 30 feet! For these reasons, witch hazel is unlike any other shrub in Wisconsin.
