Great Migration

September is a time of change as kids head back to school and the pace of life shifts out of summer vacation mode for many families. Crops begin to ripen, nights are a bit cooler, and mornings are dewy. In the skies, September brings the Harvest Moon as well as autumnal equinox on September 22, which marks the official beginning of Fall. With all of these changes, we see the beginning of one of the great spectacles of nature in Wisconsin, the great Canada goose migration!

While Canada geese mostly look the same, there are actually five distinct breeding populations which are defined by the location of their nesting grounds. These include the petite Mid-Continent cackling geese (about 4 lbs) on the north shores of Hudson Bay, standard size birds (7-9 lbs)  in the Eastern Prairie population in northern Manitoba, Mississippi Valley flock on southern Hudson Bay, and the southern James Bay Population, with the giant strain of geese known as the Temperate Breeding population (11-14lbs) gathering from around the Great Lakes region. As they converge in and around Horicon Marsh, we have the thrill of seeing over 1,000,000 geese moving through our state.

With a Canada goose in our logo, Horicon Bank takes a keen interest in geese and an even keener interest in our customers. Just like Canada geese, our customers and the Horicon Bankers who serve them come from different communities throughout Wisconsin.
